Elizabeth Boardman Ingersoll (Bowditch) Dixwell, born in 1823, was the youngest child of Salem navigator and mathematician Nathaniel Bowditch (no middle name). Elizabeth's birth record shows only, as a middle name, the surname of her father's deceased first wife, Boardman, but it is clear from later records that she also bore a second middle name: Ingersoll, the maiden surname of her mother (and the middle name given to every one of her siblings).
