Born in 1924 in Mecklenburg County, N.C. to John Alexander and Blanche Elliott Stilwell, he graduated as Salutatorian from Long Creek HS, NC in 1941.
Joe volunteered for Army Air Corp and served as B-17 waist gunner, stationed at Snetterton Heath, UK during WWII. On the 16th mission, they were shot down and parachuted into Germany. He was captured and held as a POW until the war ended. He returned home and was honorably discharged. He wears Purple Heart, and Army Air Corp Air Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters.
Joe graduated from NC State in 1949 with a degree in Textile Chemistry and Dyeing.
On November 6, 1949 he married Sara Louise Smith in Concord, NC. The couple remained in N.C., moving to Atlanta in 1960.
He started his own business in 1965 and provided refurbished industrial equipment. He operated that business with his son Carl until his death.
Joe was active at St. James Methodist. He enjoyed memberships in Trinity Class, Men's Prayer Group, SME, 8th Air Force Historical Society, and the Atlanta Area Multiple Myeloma Support Group.
Joe is survived by his wife, Sara, son and wife, Chip and Karen, Virginia Beach; daughter and husband, Sally and Jim Elliott, Decatur; son and wife, Carl and Ellen of Tucker; six grandchildren: Jenni Stilwell, Tampa; Andrew Stilwell, Harrisonburg; Ross Elliott, Arlington; Rachel Elliott, Macon; Tate Elliott, Auburn; Cody Stilwell, Tucker; and by many special relatives. He was a friend to many, especially his Mt. Vernon Towers family.
A celebration of his life will be held at St. James United Methodist Church, Atlanta at 3:00 PM on August 16. Please join us.
