CUMBERLAND — Thomas Edward Carroll, 84, of Cumberland, passed away on Friday, Dec. 14, 2012 at Washington Hospital Center, Washington D.C.

Born July 20, 1928 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Simon K. Carroll and Mary (Pendergast) Carroll. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Margaret (Winner) Carroll; three sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Lucas, Eileen Clarke, and Mary Lou Carroll.

Tom was a life long member of St. Mary Catholic Church, and he graduated from LaSalle High School in 1946, and attended LaSalle College in Philadelphia, Pa. He was President of Carroll and Clites Engravers until his retirement in 1987.
After he retired, Tom was the owner L'il Nashville on Virginia Avenue for over 10 years. While in high school, Tom was a member of the football, basketball, and baseball teams and he was a Rapplier Award winner.

In addition to his athletic skills, Tom was a vocalist who sang locally at many weddings and other special events, and he was a member of the church choir for many years. At St. Mary Catholic Church, Tom was a lector, Eucharistic minister and he was a very active volunteer. Tom was a 4th degree member of the of the K of C, Cumberland Council 586, where he was a past Grand Knight. He was also a member of the Cumberland Caravan 89 Order of the Alhambra, and was also one of the original organizers of the Alhambra sponsored ACIT tournament.

Tom was a member of the Dapper Dan Club, and he had coached the Hot Stove Outdoor Club Baseball Team. He was also a coach of the St. Mary's Catholic School Basketball Team. Recently, Tom was a member of Our Lady of the Mountains Parrish, and a board member of the Bishop Walsh Athletic Association. Tom also served with the United States Marine Corps from 1949 to 1952.

Surviving are his wife, M. Eileen (Carey) Carroll; two daughters, Mary Ann Simons and husband Edward of Germantown, Terri L. Hast and husband Mike of Cumberland; two sons, T. Kevin Carroll and wife Shirley of Alexandria Va., Brian M. Carroll and Norma Hayden-Wrather of Cumberland; grandchildren, Michael P. Simons and wife Chrissy of Frederick, Matthew C. Simons and wife Liz of Frederick, Craig A. Bennett of U.S. Army Signal Corps., Kelsie L. Bennett, student at ACM, Zoe M. Hast of Cumberland, Caryn Anthony and husband Malcolm of Silver Spring; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Hayden; several step-grandchildren; step-great-grand-children; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews; and a brother-in-law, Robert E. Carey and wife Mary Ann of Cumberland.

Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home P.A. (www.scarpellifh.com), 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Christian Wake service will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., followed by at recitation of the Rosary with the Sodality of the K of C participating. At 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday the Alhambra will also conduct a memorial service.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the Our Lady of the Mountains Parish, St. Mary's Catholic Parish, on Wednesday at 1 p.m.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded by the Post 13 Veteran's Honor Guard.
