Shirley A. Fleming

Shirley A. Fleming, 75, of Pleasant Valley Community, passed away Wednesday (May 25, 2011) with her husband and son at her side after a long battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 17, 1936, in Fairmont, a daughter of the late James F. and Hilda Abel Gwynn. Shirley was a retired Marion County elementary school teacher, retiring in 1998 from East Park Elementary School with 37 years of service. She had the distinction of being the last one-room school teacher in Marion County, which was Mt. Clare School.
She married her sweetheart, William L. "Hoppy" Fleming in 1956, and they have enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage. She and Hoppy have lived in Pleasant Valley since 1958. Both were 50-year-plus members of the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church and served the church in many ways. Shirley recently received a certificate from the church choir for 50 years of continuous service. Shirley was a graduate of Fairmont State College and West Virginia University.
Shirley enjoyed many activities including walking, working in her yard and gardening, square dancing with her husband, reading, attending yard sales, and playing cards with her friends.
Survivors include her husband, William L. "Hoppy" Fleming of Pleasant Valley; one son, William F. Fleming of Thousand Oaks, Calif.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Susan Renee Fleming in 1976, and a sister, Caroyln Gwynn Coakley.
Mrs. Fleming has chosen to donate her body to the Human Gift Registry of West Virginia University Hospital. Private memorial services will be held at a later date at the convenience of the family.
Memorials may be made to the Hospice Care Corp., 1406 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554 or to the Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, 1511 Pleasant Valley Road, Fairmont, WV 26554. The family has entrusted Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, with arrangements.
