OBIT from "Roosevelt County Record" 02 Dec 1943:

Remains Of "Railroad" Jones Brought to Elida For Burial

The mortal remains of Rueben R. Jones, who on the day of his death, last Saturday, Nov. 27, 1943, was 87 years, six months and 20 days, were brought to Elida for burial the following day. Death occured at Amarillo, Texas where he and his wife and son, Rueben's family have lived since early in 1941.

Rev. C. J. Williams conducted the services in Elida Baptist Church and interrment was made in Elida cemetery. The transfer from Amarillo was made by a Griggs ambulance.

Pall Bearers were B.C. Brewer, Paul Riegel, Joe Aschbacher, Jim Chilton, Fred Wallis, and Walter Craig.

The choir was composed of Mrs. Troy Guthrie, Mrs. Paul Riegel, Mrs. Jim Chilton, Mrs. John Minor. Pianist, Mrs. Mark Osborn.

Deceased was born May 7, 1856 in Montgomery County, Texas. Was united in marriage to Miss Fannie Berry in the early part of March 1890. He is survived by his wife and two children: Mrs. Bernice Smith of Pasadena, Calif. who could not be present and R.O. Jones who was present with his wife and son, Lloyd. A daughter, Mrs. Edna Smith is deceased. There are 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

The funeral was held on short notice and without advertising. About 60 relatives and friends viewed the remains of a long, stalwart, sterling life. R.R. Jones was a good farmer but not a railroad man. That name was used by many because of the initials. In fact that appelation more truly belonged to R. L. (Bob) Jones, a settler living west of Elida who was a railroad bridge carpenter and earned much of his livelihood that way. Thus a certain amount of confusion arose as to which was which, but the death of both men erases the need for any further explanation.

The Jones family moved to a homestead over a dozen miles southwest of Elida about 1908. The place is now owned by Jerry P. Wilson. Looking over the R. R. Jones subscription card - one of them carries back to 1925 - although he probably was a subscriber since 1916 when the Elida Enterprise was first published; (a note on Dec. 27, 1928 shows his change of address to Albuquerque. On Sept. 9, 1929 the address was changed to Elida City list. That was probably the time Mr. Jones bought the home in S.E. Elida from Floyd Sturman. March 4, 1940 the paper was marked up a year as a golden wedding present.

Early in 1942 the Elida home was sold to J.W. Pounds following an accidental fall to R.R. Jones which brought his daughter, Mrs. Pope Smith and family.

When "Railroad" Jones and his son Rueben moved to Amarillo they continued to have the Elida paper sent to them. Their subscription shows to be paid up to March '44. Thus they have been taking the paper at least a quarter of a century.
