Mrs. Grace C. Twomley, 72, died at the Woodstock Memorial Hospital February, 3, 1955. She had been a patient there for only 12 days.
She is survived by her husband, M.L. Twomley; three children: Mrs. Lee Merchant, Woodstock; Howard Twomley, Sharon, Wis.; and Mrs. Norbert Schenk, Spokane, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Eleanor Twomley, Woodstock; five grandchildren; one brother, Milton Clarke, Chicago; and two sisters, Miss .Beulah Clarke and Mrs. Bessie Bertini, Hartford, Conn.
Grace was the oldest child born to William S. Clarke and Letta A. Clarke, March 4, 1882, in Farina, Ill. There she grew up with her sisters, Bessie and Beulah, and her brother John Milton. The family were loyal members of the Seventh Day Baptist Church, and their father led the church choir, which he directed with an old-fashioned tuning fork.
She moved to Chicago to live with her half-sister, Carrie Pierce, and to attend high school. Here she met M.L. Twomley. They were married and moved to Anderson, Ind., where his business kept them for seven years. Her children, Hazel and Howard, were born there and she made many friends in the community, many of whom she retained up to the present.
In LaGrange, Ill., where Grace and Melvan lived for twenty-five years, their children, Florence and Robert, were born. Their family life reflected her loving heart and warm personality, and the Twomley home always included others: Grandmother and Grandfather Twomley, Grandmother Clarke, and Mr. and Mrs. Twomley’s brothers and sisters.
Moving to Greenwood in 1932, Grace continued to devote much time to the church and was active in the choir and other organizations, as she always had been in the past. Although she had now been in Woodstock for five years, the Greenwood church continued to be “her church.”
Funeral service were held at the Greenwood Methodist Church, Sunday, February 6, 1955, with Rev. James Reid officiating. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
