Professional Football and Baseball Player. After attending Battleground Academy in Tennessee, King played college football and baseball for West Virginia beginning in 1915. After college, he played fullback in the National Football League from 1920 to 1926 with the Akron Pros, Chicago Cardinals, and Hammond Pros. He helped lead Akron to the inaugural NFL championship in 1920 and was named to first-team All-Pro squads in 1920 and 1921. King played in 43 NFL games during his career. In addition to football, he filled in at catcher for Memphis of the Southern League for one game in 1919 and played for the General Tires nine in Akron before signing with the Pittsburgh Pirates in the spring of 1920. After playing for Pittsburgh in spring training, King caught for both Portland of the Pacific Coast League in 1921-22 and Regina of the Western Canada League in 1921. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Reno, Nevada in 1950.
