He was united in marriage to Ellen Poor daughter of William Jesse & Margaret (Boleyn)Hicks of Wadena, Iowa on January 16,1916. Five children were born to this union: Vera, Lucille, Jesse M,Mary Ellen, and Joe Harley.
After a fall on the farm, he went to the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa where he had a ruptured appendix and passed away at the hospital on Saturday August 20,1932. He was only 38 years old.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Arlington with burial in the Taylorsville Cemetery.
