Born February 27, 1918 in Twitty, to Mr. and Mrs. A. R. (Ott) Clay, Lottie May Clay attended school at Wheeler and Shamrock in Wheeler County and Lone Mound, Dozier and Samnorwood schools in Collingsworth County. She graduated from Samnorwood High School in 1936.
Miss Clay received her BS degree in primary education in 1940 from West Texas University in Canyon and a Master of Arts degree from the University of Texas El Paso in 1947. Her first teaching job was Moon School in Paducah. She also taught in Samnorwood school systems. She moved to Whittier, CA in 1942 and worked in the war effort as a welder for Consolidated Steel Shipbuilders in Long Beach.
In 1944-45 Miss Clay taught at the Cottonwood Independent School District in Cottonwood, AZ. then she taught at Mendota ISD in Mendota, CA from 1945-1951.
She married John Sidney Cox of Mendota in Phoenix, AZ June 27, 1951. Moving to El Paso, Mrs. Cox taught at Burleson School, El Paso ISD until 1958. Mr. Cox was killed in a car accident in June 1957, shortly before he was to graduate from the University of Texas El Paso.
Mrs. Cox moved to Shamrock and taught at Lela School until 1962. She married Louis Dalford Hicks in 1961. The couple had one son, Louis Paul Hicks. The couple were divorced.
Mrs. Hicks moved to Briscoe and taught school there until her retirement on April 30, 1973. She married T. J. Cole, Jr. of Wheeler, February 28, 1968. The couple farmed about 3 miles east of Wheeler for more than 19 years.
Mrs. Cole suffered a stroke in May 1985 and was in a wheelchair the remainder of her life. Mr. and Mrs. Cole divorced in 1987 and Mrs. Cole moved to Amarillo.
Mrs. Cole was a member of the Landmark Baptist Church in Wheeler, the Teachers Retirement System of Texas and the National Teachers Retirement Association.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cole was preceded in death by two sisters, Vivian Sikes of Mablevale, AR and Dolly Bradstreet of Tucson, AZ.
