Phillip was the son of John Abbott, Jr., of Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts and Hannah Farnum Abbott of Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts. Hannah and John were married on 17 June 1746 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Hannah and John had seven children. They were: Jonathan A. Abbott was born on 12 April 1747; Phillip Abbott was born on 04 October 1749; Hannah Abbott was born on 29 August 1751; Susannah Abbott was born on 20 December 1753; Betsey (twin) Abbott was born on 09 November 1758; Susannah (twin) Abbott was born on 09 NOV 1758; and John Abbott was born on 24 January 1769. All the children were born in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.

John Abbott, Jr., served in the Revolution - enlisted on 01 May 1779 or 06 July 1779 at Deerfield, Epson Canterbury, New Hampshire, as a private in the 8th Company, 3rd Regiment under Col. Alexander Scammell; John was a drummer stationed at Deerfield. In November and December 1779 he was in the 3rd Battalion of the New Hampshire, Forces in Captain Nicholas Gilman's Company under Col. Alex Scammell. In 1780 he was under Captain Benjamin Ellis' Company, 3rd Battalion New Hampshire, Forces under Col. Alex Scammell as a private / drummer and stationed at Camp Fortune. He was promoted on 09 March 1780 (does not say to what rank) and the last entry is dated February 1781 at Canterbury.

The name of Abbott comprises a larger proportion of the inhabitants of the Town of Andover, Oxford County, Maine, than any other. They came from Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, to this town. All of that name that ever lived here; with one exception, vis: Mr Nathaniel Abbott, or "Lazy Nat" as he was called, who formerly lived in Rumford, Oxford County, Maine, lived here but a few years than returned to Rumford, Oxford County, Maine, and died soon after. His son Jonathan came here and began work on his farm in 1790 and moved his family here in 1791, Phillip, another son, moved from Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts, to Bethel, Oxford County, Maine, in 1791 with his family, including his father and mother, and they lived there till 05 May 1794 when they all came to Andover, Oxford County, Maine, and lived here till their deaths. I know very little of the elder John Abbott, and his wife. They were old people when they came here. Report says they were very industrious and good citizens. They lived with their son John, at the lower end of the town. Mr. John Abbott was born on 30 June 1728, and died on 06 December 1808. (From the Andover Memorials by Agnes Blake Poor)

Phillip married Elizabeth Frye of Maine on 20 November 1771 in Andover, Oxford County, Maine. Elizabeth and Phillip had six children. They were: Holton Hamilton Abbott was born on 26 June 1774; Isaac Abbott was born in 1776 in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts; Phillip Abbott was born in 1778; Timothy Abbott was born on 18 February 1781; Nathaniel Frye Abbott was born on 18 August 1783; and Samuel Abbott was born in 1785. All the children were born in Andover, Essex County, Massachusetts.

Note: Came to Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA in 1792 and selected for his farm Lot No._, West side, the lot south of his brothers. He was a cooper by trade but did not do much at that business here. He had a large and good farm but was not much of a farmer nor manager. He lived here several years, sold out, and moved to Norway, Oxford, Maine, USA. He did not succeed very well there, and after living there five years he came back to his old farm in Andover, Oxford, Maine, USA where he and his wife spent the remainder of their days. As a man he was very different from his brother Jonathan. He was kind and social in his feelings, and to his family, very quick and passionate, but not revengeful, always appearing to be sorry after giving vent to his feelings. He read but little, and his literary acquirements were very small. He never interested himself in politics, or even in town affairs. I do not know of his ever holding a town office. He was very industrious and economical. I would here say that Mr. Phillip Abbott was in the habit of sleeping whenever he was not at work, whether in the house or out-of-doors, he could not sit down at any time without dropping asleep, and he was frequently known to go to sleep and drop his tools while at work; this was one reason why he did not read more. He had a large family but did not do much for their improvement or education, in fact, they grew up without much home instruction. The family were rather rude. As a father and companion he was kind, affectionate, and social when awake. He lived well, but did not accumulate much property. He was a member of the church here and a very constant attendant at church. Elizabeth Fry ( ), his wife, was quiet, inoffensive woman without much energy or cultivation. As a companion and mother, kind and affectionate, but not with much family government. She was very punctual managing her household affairs. (Copied from the Andover Memorials by Agnes Blake Poor)
