She was born December 25, 1923 in Rush County to Mitch and Bertha Whitton Hammon and was a 1941 graduate of New Salem High School. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church since 1951.
June had been employed by Connersville Casket Company, sewing casket linings for 14 years and was a lunch lady at the Connersville High School cafeteria for 10 years. She also had her own business, June's Yarn & Bead Shop for several years. For 6 years she had taught crocheting and knitting in night classes at the high school. She had also ran the CHS basketball coat check for many years. She often told the story of serving Sam Walton and his employees when she was 19 and employed as a restaurant cook in Little Rock, AR. She always stated that Mr. Walton was the "nicest man".
Survivors include her husband, Charles C. Adkins, whom she married September 4, 1942; a daughter: Bonnie Gillispie of Connersville; two sisters: Lettie McClure of Alpine and Georgie Shuck of Richmond; 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two daughters: Beverly Ann Adkins and Barbara Jean Meyer; two brothers: Wayne and Marvin Hammon; three sisters: Irene Klein, Mary Burton and Shirley Hargest.
Funeral services will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday at Showalter Blackwell Long Funeral Home, Myers Chapel, Connersville with Pastor John Reynolds of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Valley Grove Cemetery, Wayne County. Friends may visit at the funeral home on Wednesday from 2 pm until the time of service where memorial contributions can be made to the Journey of Faith at Calvary Baptist Church.
