"Lititz Man Killed as Auto Hits Pole–John Fleischman Meets Death in Crash; Wife and 2 Daughters Hurt
When something went wrong with the steering gear of the Ford sedan he was driving Sunday afternoon, John Fleischman, 61, of 303 E. Front Street, was killed instantly and his wife and two daughters, who were riding with him, were seriously hurt. The tragic accident occured on the road from Brickerville to Clay as their family were on their way to their home here after a short Sunday drive.

At latest reports, Mrs. Fleischman and the two daughters, Mildred and Catherine were improving and no serious results were anticipated from their injuries.

That Mrs. Fleischmana is alive today is due to the fact that Catherine stopped the flow of blood from a severed artery with an improvised tourniquet, which served until medical attention could be had. Other injuries to the mother include a broken right clavicle, several broken ribs and possibly fractured wrist. Mildred, who was a patient with her mother in the Lancaster General Hospital, where they were taken after the accident, sustained a laceration of the arm, and a cut above her eyes. Catherine was treated at the hospital for abrasions of both legs and a cut on the right hand.

According to Catherine, the steering gear on the car had developed trouble on the ride, causing the car to jolt considerably. Mr. Fleischman started for home, but before long something broke, sending the machine across the road and into a pole. Contrary to rumor, no cars were near the scene at the time.

Persons living nearby heard the crash and investigated. They found the women free of the car, but Mr. Fleischman slumped over the steering wheel. It was said by Dr. H. A. Long of Brickerville, who was called, that he had died instantly. The force of the crash broke off the steering wheel and damaged the car beyond repair.

Lawrence Carpenter, of Lititz, one of the rescuers, was burned about the hands when he touched the car. Evidently the impact had broken a wire carrying electricity and charging the car.

Mrs. Fleischman is expected to be able to return from the hospital in a week or ten days.

Mr. Fleischman's funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 1:30 from his late home and at 2.00 from the Moravian Church.

Besides his wife, Mr. Fleischman is survived by the following children: Mrs. Gladys Hilday, of Reading; Mrs. Dorothy Rosenberg, of Lititz; George of Eddington, Pa.; and Mildred, Catherine and Lester at home."
