Last member of Old Family Dies
Mrs. Ellie Bell Stewart, the last of one of Blair county’s oldest and best known pioneer families and a grand daughter of Edward Bell, the founder of Bell’s Mills, now Bellwood, died at her home, 408 Maple Avenue, Bellwood, on Friday night at 11:35 o’clock, death being due to ills incident to old age.
Mrs. Stewart was the youngest daughter of John Bell, son of Edward Bell, and was born at Mary Ann Forges, where her father was a pioneer iron master, on Jan. 24, 1837, on the old Bell homestead. She spent her entire life in Blair county and is the last member of a large family.
Early in life, while a student at the Lewisburg academy, she consecrated her life to the Saviour and was baptized into the faith and united with the Lewisburg Baptist church by her uncle, the late A.T. Bell.
When she returned from school, she placed her letter with the Logan Valley Baptist church in Bellwood, that being seventy years ago, and she was the oldest member on record in that church. Her devotion to the church and her Saviour was most devout and, although of late years and afflicted with deafness, she seldom missed divine services.
Surviving are Elizabeth, wife of E.S. Glasgow of Scottdale, and John Bell. One daughter, Margaret, wife of H.G. Laird, died some years ago, and the grandmother helped care for the children of Mrs. Laird, including Janet, wife of C.A. McDonald of Ames, Iowa, Harvey G Laird, Jr., and James Fred Laird of Bellwood. She is also survived by these other grandchildren: E. Boyd Glasgow and Mrs. Helen Glasgow Stringer, both of Scottdale.
Public funeral services will be conducted on Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock and the services will be in charge of Rev. S.G Forges of Huntingdon.
