Herschel was the son of Clarence Frederick Leonberger and Ruth Vickery. Born Sept. 15, 1926 in Saline Mines,
Bowlesville twp., Gallatin County Illinois. He served in the Army Air Corps in Japan during WWII.
Herschel married Dorthy M. Fielding and has one daughter, Patricia Ann Leonberger.
Herschel was killed in a motorcycle accident in Alton Illinois. Besides his wife and daughter he was survived by his mother and stepfather, Ruth Vickery and Elmer (Dick) South. His half sister Eula May Leonberger and her husband Robbie Anderson, two half brothers Billy John and Elmer (Bubby) South. His Grandparents Charles Frederick and Rosa Ginger Leonberger and John A. Vickery, five neices and one nephew. He was preceded in death by a brother Gilbert, his father Clarence Frederick "Fred" Leonberger and his grandmother Augusta Vickery.
Though his life was short, Herschel was greatly loved and respected by all who knew him. Thoughts of him will always warm our hearts and make us smile.

Herschel Leonberger Dies Of Injuries In Motor Mishaps
Wood River Boy 12, Was Hurt in Motorcycle Crash
Herschel Leonberger injured in motor vehicle accident in Alton area last week succumed in Alton Memorial hospital. Herschel Frederick Leonberger, 21, son of Mrs. Elmer South of 15 South Main, Woodriver, died at 12:45 a.m. today in Alton Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since Wednesday evening when a motorcycle onwhich he and a half-brother, Billy South, 12 came into collision with a truck in the 2500-block of East Broadway. Billy, who suffered a head injury, is still unconscious and his condition is serious.
Leonberger was born Sept. 15, 1926, at Shawneetown, Ill., and the body will be returned there for funeral services Wednesday at 2p.m. in Wright Funeral Home. Burial will be in Westwood Cemetery, at Shawneetown. Pending time the body is taken to Shawneetown it will be at Streeper Funeral Home, Wood River, where friends may call after 7 p.m., today and until 8 a.m. Tuesday.
Surviving Herschel Leonberger in addition to his mother and brother, Billy are his 5 month old daughter, Patricia Ann, his step-father, Elmer South, a half-brother, Elmer Eugene Jr., a sister. Mrs. Eula May Anderson, of Elizabeth Town ILL., his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Leonberger, of Cave-in-Rock, ILL. and his maternal grandfather, Mr. John Vickery, of Wood River, ILL.

Funeral services for Herschel Fredrick Leonberger, 21, of Wood River, who was fatally injured a week ago today in a motorcycle accident in which a half-brother, Billy South, 12, also incurred serious injury, were held Tuesday at
Shawneetown. Time of the funeral had been scheduled for Wednesday, but because of the condition of Billy, other son of Mr. and Mrs. South, the time was advanced so
they could return home to attend him.
Rites for Leonberger were held at 2 p. m., Tuesday in Wright funeral home, with the Rev. J. E. Gill, .a Baptist minister of Shawneetown, officiating. Burial was in
Westwood cemetery. Leonberger, who was the son of Mrs. Ruth South of Wood River, is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Dorothy Leonberger, and a five month old daughter, Patricia Ann
