Margery is recorded in the Vermont Historical Gazetteer of 1871 as being a Native American from a tribe in the area of Hartford, CT in the early 18th century. It is believed that this tribe was remnants of the Pequot tribe. A detailed account of her life is given noting that she worked as a healer, and the pursuit of this trade drove the family into Vermont as western medicine began to take over in Connecticut. She learned the craft from her father who was brother to the tribal chief or "sachem" and the tribal healer. She was introduced to her husband in this fashion owing to some misfortune while swimming that nearly drowned him. His companion brought her to attend to him and after he recovered he continued to call upon her.
