He was the son of William A. (Born 1784 in Ireland) and Charity (Briles or Williams; born 1785 in N. or S. Carolina) Gattis. His sibling were: John, Celia Lavina (Downey), Samuel, Rev. William G. and Nancy Jean. The name of Gatteys is spelled many different ways even in the same family.

He married Barbara Stephens 12 Jan 1843 in Tishomingo County, MS. Fourteen children have been documented with this union.
