Herbert L. Vonderlage, 89, of Omaha, formerly of the Hooper and Fremont area, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005, at his residence in Brighton Gardens in Omaha.

He was born Feb. 17, 1916, in Washington County in the teacherage of Immanuel Lutheran Church and School, east of Hooper. His father, a teacher in that parochial school, was Friedrich Adolph Vonderlage and his mother was Amelia (Bredemeier) Vonderlage. He grew up there, attending Immanuel Lutheran School, then the Hartung School, and graduating as the salutatorian from Hooper High School. He received a scholarship to Midland College and graduated from there in 1938.

He married Helen Pfeiffer on Oct. 9, 1938. He began his employment with Elkhorn Valley Finance Co. in Fremont in 1938. He entered the U.S. Navy in Hollywood, Fla., as an ensign in March 1943. He served on the USS Waller in the Philippines, Borneo and Shanghai. He completed his military career with the reserves, retiring as a commander after 30 years of service. He had been the commander of Fremont's Naval Reserve unit.

In 1946, he began his employment with the Fremont Packing Co., which was acquired by George A. Hormel Co. In 1980, after 34 years, he retired from Hormel Foods Corporation as director of accounting in the corporate offices in Minnesota. The Vonderlages spent the first several years of their retirement in Colorado Springs, Colo., before moving to Omaha in 1989.

During their years in Fremont, he was most proud of his five years as a city councilman. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for 34 years and had served as the congregational president, and he had been chairman of the Trinity Lutheran School building committee. He had served as the commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and he was a volunteer fireman. He had been chairman of the Fremont Republican Party, a member of the Fremont Male Chorus and he also had taken training for a pilot's license.

Survivors include: a son, Richard (and wife, Linda) Vonderlage of Omaha; a daughter, Susan (Mrs. William) Hammer of Hagerstown, Md.; four grandchildren, Paul and Darrin Vonderlage of Omaha, Traci (Mrs. Mark) Scott of Omaha and Jeffrey (and wife, Kimberly) Miller of Ellicott City, Md.; and three great-grandchildren, Julia and Abigail Miller of Ellicott City and Trenton Scott of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen in December 2004, by a son, Herbert Lance Vonderlage in 1955, and by six siblings.

The funeral will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church (20844 Bonanza), south of Elkhorn. The Revs. David Linkugel and Donald Levenhagen will officiate. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with the family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont with military honors by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854.
