James enlisted in CO. H, 54th GEORGIA REGT., CSA at Columbus, GA in November 1862. He was discharged April 17, 1865.
He worked as a carpenter and a farmer; and was a member of the Masonic Order, at Crawford. The Shiloh Baptist church membership roll indicates he joined in 1876. Previously, he and Sarah had been members of Missionary Baptist church since 1872.
He died from injuries sustained in a buggy accident (see death notice photo).
