Dr. Clarence Babcock
retired Technology Chief at O-I, University Professor

Dr. Clarence L. Babcock, 80, formerly of Potomac Drive, retired chief of glass technology at the Owens-Illinois, Inc., Technical Center here, died Wednesday in his home in Tucson, Ariz., after an apparent heart attack.

After retiring from the technical center in 1968, Dr. Babcock was professor of optical sciences at the University of Tucson 10 years. He was named professor emeritus at the university six years ago.

A native of Paoli, Ind., he attended Ball State University and was a graduate of Purdue University where he received a doctorate in physics in 1935. Shortly thereafter, he joined Owens-Illinois, Inc., in Alton, Ill., moving to Toledo two years later to help organize the firm's technical center.

He was one of several O-I researchers who had worked on the development and fabrication of glass containers.

Dr. Babcock led in the development of materials used in zero-expansion glass-ceramics utilized in making high fidelity mirrors for telescopes including the one used at Kitt Peak in Arizona.

In 1967, he was given the top award by the Northwestern Ohio section of the American Ceramics Society for t distinguished service to science and industry.

Chairman of the glass division of the American Ceramic Society, he was the society's national vice-president in the 1960's. He also was a member of the council of the International Commission on Glass.

A longtime member of the First Unitarian Church, Toledo, Dr. Babcock was a past president of the church board.

Surviving are his wife, Martha, daughters, Mrs. Susan Elliott and Mrs. Jane Seward and son, Larry L.

Memorial services will be at 2:30 today in the First Unitarian Church Tucson.

The family requests that any tributes be in the form of contributions to a charity of the donor's choice.
