Joseph William Vick was an early settler in Roosevelt County, NM. He was born in Oktibbeha, Mississippi, to Joshua Thomas Vick and Judith Ann BALL. He came by wagon with his parents to Lee County, TX ca 1869-70.

In 1918 Joseph and his wife, Margaret Ann Lyles, followed their son, James Albert Vick, and his family to Roosevelt County, and settled at Richland, in the southern part of the county where they helped with the family farm.

On 06 Jan 1920 they bought the five acres of property where they farmed for several years. This was directly north of the present day Cattle Baron restaurant (Portales), where the Conoco station is now located. Joseph William and Margaret Ann had nine children, four of whom were dwarfs, none of whom grew to be over four feet tall. Two died at age 18, and two died at age 32. Joseph William was an avid hunter and really enjoyed hunting rabbits and doves.
