Charles grew up in Chestnut Hill and later lived with his family in Rosemont for almost 50 years before moving to Beaumont in Bryn Mawr. He graduated from The Pomfret School in 1941 and Princeton University in 1945. During World War Ii he served in Europe as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He worked for Smith, Kline & French Laboratories in Philadelphia, starting as a Market Research Analyst and retiring in 1987 as Vice President of International Marketing. He married Lea Harrison in 1951 and raised four children: Polly, Lea, Charlie and Jay.
He was survived by his younger sister, Elizabeth Bolling Toland, but was predeceased by his brother Robert H. Bolling Jr.
