J. C. Gunkel the subject of sketch, born 66 yrs. ago in Indiana, and died February 21, 1920 at his home in Portersville, California, where he had resided for the past several years.
Mr. Gunkel came to Kansas in 1856 with his parents, who settled on a claim near Emporia, in the Fowler - Gunkel neighborhood, where he grew to manhood, and near where most of his life was spent. A few yrs., before going to California he lived in Rock Valley.
John Gunkel was married in 1873 to Miss Louisa Brendel who survived him. He also leaves to mourn the loss of a kind father, 1 son, and three daughters. They are Alva Gunkel, Mrs. Mary Burwell, of Calif.; and Mrs. Permela Baysinger and Mrs. John Stafford of Madison.
Interment was made in California.
