Burial of Mrs C.N.Gardner
Plainfield, March 21 - The funeral was held this afternoon at Ashfield Congregational church of Mrs Effie Gertrude Gardner, 72, a native of Plainfield and resident here for many years. She was the wife of Charles N Gardner of Spruce Corner, Ashfield, where she was living at the time of her death, which took place at Dickinson hospital, Northampton, after a long illness. Burial was in the Plain cemetery, Ashfield, with Rev. Walter Couch officiating. Mrs Gardner, the daughter of James and Maria (Stockwell) Winslow, was married in Plainfield Oct. 31, 1892 by Rev. John Woodhull at that time pastor of the Plainfield Congregational church. Prior to her marriage she attended the local schools and Northampton high school and was a teacher for 12 years in Plainfield, West Cummington, and Ashfield schools. She was a member of the Ashfield school board for eight years. Mr and Mrs Gardner lived in Plainfield, West Cummington, Keene, N.H., Northampton and Ashfield, where they had made their home the past 23 years. While in Northampton, Mrs Gardner was a member of the WTCU [Woman's Christian Temperance Union founded in Cleveland, Ohio in November of 1874] in which she took an active part for several years. She was also connected with various dramatic and debating societies there. Mr and Mrs Gardner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct 31st last. Besides her husband, Mrs Gardner is survived by one sister Mrs George C Billings and a nephew Reginauld Billings, both of Plainfield.
