James Bane Price "Gentleman Jim" ran a General Store in Price's Fork, Montgomery Co., VA. It is unknown exactly when Price's general store was established, but tax records indicate that the store was built around 1871. It appears from the account ledgers that Price was not only a supplier of food and goods, but also of credit, as most of the transactions were made through either credit or barter. (Account books are part of the special collections at Virginia Tech) In addition to grocery products, Price sold such items as clothing, shoes, tobacco, coal, tools, and drugs. While operating as a merchant, Price also engaged in other business and in farming. He ran the store until his death in 1898.
He married Sarah J. Winston on November 26, 1867. From this union 6 children were born: Lula Belle (1869), Samuel Winston (1871), Maud (1875), James Ferdinand (1880), Daisy Winston (1883) and Clara Bane (1885).
