Plane crash kills Garry Hurlbutt

Just a couple of months after he had begun work as a flight instructor for Interstate Airmotive, Inc., Lambert Field, St. Louis, Mo., A. Garry Hurlbutt was killed in a plane crash on Wednesday evening, August 30, 1967. He had previously been a Northfield community farmer who enjoyed flying as a hobby. Mr. Hurlbutt was 33.

The crash occurred while Mr. Hurlbutt was checking out a flight student in night flying. The young man had made one successful landing and, at that time, two of his teen-age friends were taken aboard as passengers. When the student brought the plane in for a second landing, the four passenger craft struck power lines at the edge of the airport. The student survived as did one of the passengers, but the other passenger and the instructor were killed.

The funeral service was held Saturday afternoon, Sept. 2, at the Northfield Methodist church where Mr. Hurlbutt was a member. The Rev. W. T. Horst officiated. Mrs. Ted Scott was organist and Sigurd Fredrickson, soloist.

Interment was in the Hurlbutt family plot at Oakwood cemetery at Rochester. Those who served as pallbearers were Robert Gill, Robert Ebling, Harold Paulson, James Hovland, Donald Kimber and Claude Brown. The arrangements were made by the Zanmiller-Benson Funeral Home.

Mr. Hurlbutt was born on February 19, 1934, at Bernie, Mo., the son of Edith Houston Hurlbutt (now Mrs. Frank Sanderson of Northfield) and the late Vannice A. Hurlbutt.

With his family, he moved to the Northfield area when he was a child and he attended local schools--Nerstrand school for the first three years, Northfield public schools for the remainder of his years through high school graduation. He married Shirley Stowe on September 7, 1952, in the Northfield Methodist church.

Successful at farming, he was named Northfield's Outstanding Young Farmer in 1962 by the Northfield Jaycees. He was for some time a director of the Tri-Couty Co-op and was a past director of the Northfield Shipping association. Until moving to St. Louis, he was a member of the Bridgewater township board.

He was a member of the Central Livestock association, of the Bridgewater Farm Bureau, the Rice Soil and Water Conservation district, and of Northfield Lodge No. 50, IOOF. He had served in Rice County Farm Bureau Federation office.

At the time of his death, he stil retained ownership of Horizon Heights farm a short distance south of Northfield and owned the herd of dairy cattle there. Mr. and Mrs. Francis Perry have been operating the farm in partnership with the Hurlbutts.

Mr. Hurlbutt is survived by his wife; one daughter, Jerrolyn, nearly 14; two sons, Joel 3, and John nearly 2; his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sanderson. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, his father, Vannice; and a brother, Waldo who died in infance. - Hoffman Photo
