The following information was given to me in 2001 by Joyce Jones of Hamilton, Alabama:
"General George Washington Overton married Nancy Lucressy Smith in 1874 Randolph County, Alabama. General Overton left Randolph County, Alabama about 1883 with his family going west to Texas in a covered wagon. They did not stay there long, because on the way back to Randolph County, Alabama, they camped at Blount Springs, Blount County, Alabama. Here General Overton was stabbed and killed by Jeff Vanhorn. Their son Jacob Overton was around 6 months old at this time. Nancy Smith Overton had no money so she could not stay to prosecute the man for murder. I have been told there is NO MARKER on General Overton's grave where ever it is. Nancy Smith Overton left Blount County, Alabama and went to Clay County, Alabama where she raised all five children alone."
