He was born on March 4, 1920 north of Burr, Nebraska to Roy & Minnie (Enterline) Buchanan. He married Chrystal Carmichael on December 19, 1941 in Lincoln. They were married over 70 years. John served in the U.S. Army Air Corp in the Euopean Theatre during WWII. He retired from Goodyear Tire & Rubber after 25 years.
