John was wounded and captured at the Battle of First Manassas on 21 July 1861, and taken to Richmond, where he died. He was initially buried with more than 500 other POWs and at least a dozen Unionist civilians, in a large burial plot just outside the east wall of Shockoe Hill Cemetery.
All of the remains were moved in 1866-67 to Richmond National Cemetery, where they rest today under "Unknown" markers. His name appears on a commemorative monument, shown here, at Shockoe Hill Cemetery. For more on the POPWs and the monument, see https://soldiersofshockoehill.com.
