Obituary:

District Judge Robert R. Dickson, a resident of this city since 1877, was found dead in his bed at his home here Wednesday morning about 9:00 o'clock by a member of the family and when the news of his death became known it was a shock to his many friends here. He had not been ill and was out to the golf tournament the afternoon before.

Funeral services will be held from the Presbyterian church in this city Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock with Dr. John E. Spencer in charge of the services at the church. Services at the grave will be in charge of the Masonic lodge of which he had been a prominent leader, and was Grand Master of the Nebraska Masons in the years 1924-25.

Judge Dickson was born on Nov 21, 1863, in Rock County, Wisconsin. He received his education in Mitchell County, Iowa and also attended the Cedar Valley Seminary.

He studied law under L. M. Rice of Osage, Iowa, and came to Nebraska in 1887. He was admitted to the bar at Madison, Nebr., in June of that year and then moved to O'Neill later in the year and has been a resident of this city since that time. He practiced law here from 1887 until 1912 when he took office of district judge having been elected to that office in the fall election of 1911. He has held the office of district judge continuously since that time and was the senior district judge in the state.

He was united in marriage to Marion Skirving in O'Neill on June 14, 1900. Three daughters were born to them: Marjorie at home, Marion of Norfolk, and Mrs. Roy D. Anderson of Portland, Oregon. We understand that Mrs. Dickson probably will not be told of the death of her husband, as she has been ill for the past two months and is conscious only at brief intervals. Her death has been expected at any time.

During his long service on the bench, Judge Dickson has earned great respect for his work. In 1938 and estimate was made of the number of cases he had heard, 12,000, and that number 1976 had been appealed and only 39 had been reversed by the higher court. In the earlier days Judge Dickson was known over the state as an excellent attorney. Probably one of the best known cases, he was active in was the case of Barrett Scott, who had embezzled about $90,000 of the money of Holt county while serving as county treasurer. He also served O'Neill as Mayor during the years of 1893 and 1894.

Among organizations with which he was affiliated with were: the Fifteenth District and Nebraska State Bar Associations; the O'Neill Country Club; the Presbyterian Church, of which he was a past trustee; and the I. O. O. F. Lodge. He was Grand Master of the Masons in Nebraska in 1924-25 and during the World War was county chairman of the Council of Defense and chairman of the Liberty Loan drives. He was a large land owner and devoted much of his time to his holdings.
