John is the son of John U Tobler and Anna Oertle Tobler of Switzerland.
In 1893, at the age of 17, he immigrated to the United States and lived in Sylvester Township of Wisconsin.
John enlisted as a Blacksmith in Co. I, 6th Calvary, Fort Sheridan, Illinois on 17 March 1898. He transferred from the U.S. Calvary to the U.S. Hospital Corp on 19 August 1899 and was discharged on 16 March 1901.
John married Eleanor Rust Sylvester on 8 April 1901.
They had four children:
