In 1993, Jennings D Means published a "Supplement to "The Means Family of America" and this Supplement changed the first pages of the "Means" book as to the origins of the Means.

John was the son of John and Mary Keever of Derry Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, later Mifflin County. John's father died in 1779 and he willed his property in Derry Township to his two sons, John and Samuel Keever. This property was first granted to Charles Coxe and was purchased from him by John Keever Senior in 1771.

John was enrolled as a private, seventh class, Eighth Company, Fifth Battalion of the Cumberland Militia under Captain Thomas Alexander, March 25, 1778.
