William followed in his fathers and grandfathers footsteps (both were named Heinrich) and was a butcher. He likely had a stall in one or more of the several market houses in Philadelphia. He married Christianna Bradley in 1832 and they had five children together. They were fairly prosperous and had live-in Irish servants. The 1870 census estimates their estate at $40,000 ( about $900,000 in 2022 dollars) He would live a long life and see his son go beyond being a butcher to selling cattle and meat domestically and overseas and become extremely wealthy.
