Michael was born in Rowan County, North Carolina, near Salisbury. He enlisted February 11, 1862 in Hiawassee, Geogia , as a private in Co. D., 24th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, CSA. He served in that unit until his capture June 1, 1864 at Cold Harbor, VA. Soon, he and other POWs were marched to White House, VA and then shipped by boat to the POW prison at Point Lookout, Maryland and then by train 7/12/1864 to Elmira, New York. He was released from Elmra 6/16/1865. He later moved to Warren County, Oklahoma.
