Richard D. "Dick" Slocum, 80, died Saturday, April 7 ,2001, at his residence in Port Charlotte, Fla.

He was born Dec. 7, 1920, in Cleveland, Ohio, and after graduation from high school in 1939 he joined the U.S. Army. He served for over 20 years, spending all of World War II in the Pacific Theater and more than one year in Korea. He retired as Command Sergeant Major in Military Intelligence and, while he did not talk about it much, it was a job he enjoyed very much.

Dick moved his family to Port Charlotte 41 years ago from Cleveland and opened the first lawn equipment sales and service business on the west side of U.S. 41. He operated Port Charlotte Mower Sales and Service for more than 20 years. He was a Charter Member of the First Alliance Church in Port Charlotte and a member of American Legion Post 110, Port Charlotte.

He is survived by his daughter, Pamela Lynn Gruen, of Toccoa Falls, Ga; a son-in-law, David Gruen; and grandchildren John David and Julie Marie Gruen.

Friends may call Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Paul Schelm Funeral Home in Port Charlotte. Funeral Services will be held at 7 p.m. at the Funeral Home with the Rev. Merle Stombaugh officiating. Burial will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials maybe given to the First Alliance Church, 20444 Midway Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL, 33952. Arrangements are by Paul Schelm Funeral Home.
