Age 97, of Howell, formerly of Perry died Wednesday, November 28th at St. Joseph Hospital in Ann Arbor. Her earthly suffering has ended, and she is with her Lord.

Ruth was born on March 26, 1915, in New Carlisle, Ohio, the daughter of Harry B. and Ida Mae (Walter) Hoke. She graduated from New Carlisle High School in 1933, and attended both Cedarville College and Wayne State University finishing with a B.S. in Education. She taught in the Dayton area from 1936 until 1941.

After a ten year courtship, Ruth was married to Harold House, Sr. in New Carlisle, Ohio, on June 15, 1941, and moved to the Detroit area. In 1950 Ruth began substituting teaching in the Clarenceville School District, accepting a full-time position in 1951 after both children were in school. She taught in that district for twenty-six years, having the privilege of handing both of her children their high school diplomas upon graduation. She retired from Clarenceville Schools in 1977. Ruth worked for Nelson-House Funeral Homes for eleven years, from 1981 until 1992.

Ruth and her husband traveled extensively throughout the United States. She sailed on the S.S. American, a Great Lakes Freighter, flew to Hawaii, rode on a train across the entire country of Canada, and sailed on Eastern Caribbean cruises to the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and through the Panama Canal.

Ruth was a seamstress and a pianist, mastering the art of hospitality by entertaining often at her dining room table. Her door was always open to a relative, friend, or needy acquaintance needing lodging. She was actively involved in church work, Gideons, Salvation Army, and nursing home visitation.

Ruth leaves the greatest gift of all: a good example. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, a giving grandmother, and a proud great-grandmother. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Rachel (Ron) Bergin of Howell; one son Harold 'Sonny" (Peggy) House Jr. of Perrinton; six grandchildren, Mrs. Shauna (Sam) Grotzke of Fairbanks, Alaska; Chad House of Pinehurst, North Carolina; Darci (Kurtis) Schulzle of St. Johns; Graydon (Gina) Bell of Mason; Ron (Paula) Bergin of Ionia; and Michelle (Dave) Geer of Fenton; nine great grandchildren.

She is also survived by one sister, Naomi Hoke of New Carlisle, Ohio.

She is predeceased by her husband Harold, Sr., daugher Mary Alice House, and sibling: Mary Hoke, Frances Doenges, and Samuel Hoke.

Funeral services will be held Sunday at 7:00 p.m. ath Marr Community Church at 4494 N. Burkhart Road, Howell, MI 48855 with Rev. Marvin Engbrecht officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at 5:00 until the service. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Howell, Michigan.
