William Alonzo Gates was born on June 16, 1834, in Otsego County, New York. He arrived in Stearns County, Minnesota in 1858 on a hunting-trapping trip in the vicinity of Grand Lake, where he met his future wife. William Gates married Lydia Moore in 1859, in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Following their marriage they lived in St. Cloud, MN and he freighted, principally from St. Cloud to Ft. Abercrombie, until the extension of the railway. They had one male child, Alfred H. Gates, during their marriage who followed in his father tracks to becoming a fine Minnesota freemason. In May 1878 he moved to the Gates' farm in Langola Twp, Benton Co, MN. While on a trip to St. Cloud for the purpose of procuring one of the first Osborne wire binding harvesters in that region he met with an accident which caused his death, being kicked by one of his mules. William died on July 22, 1879, in Stearns County, Minnesota, at the age of 45, and was buried in St Cloud, Minnesota in North Star Cemetery.
