Elwood J. "Woody" Bird, a former Greeley resident, and a brother of Mrs. Mae Armatage, 2324 6th Ave., died Saturday, Oct 17, in Long Beach (Calif.) Memorial Hospital following an open heart surgery. He was 52. The open heart surgery which Bird had undergone is an operation which has been done only for the past two years, involving removal of veins from the legs and transplanting to the heart. The operation was described in detail in Readers' Digest in Sept. 1970. Bird was the owner of several dry cleaning shops in California. He attended Greeley schools and had served in the Navy in World War II. He was the son of the late Roy E. and Mary A. Bird who farmed in the Briggsdale community. His grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bird, were early Briggsdale settlers, his grandmother the first postmaster at Briggsdale. His maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John Forquer, were early settlers in the Ashton district. Surviving in addition to Mrs. Armatage are his wife, Mrs. Carol Bird; a son, Gene, and a daughter, Peggy, and two grandchildren. Also surviving are another sister, Mrs. Alice Hines, and a brother, Larry Bird, both of Ketchikan, Alaska. Funeral services were held Oct. 21 in Long Beach in Cornelius Church, which
