William was born April 5, 1830, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and was married to Martha Wilson. Marriage date unknown at this time. They had 3 children together, 1 daughter and 2 sons. They also adopted a girl by the name of Cora Slaugenhouk who was already somehow related to the family. They lived in the East Brady / Armstrong County area until William moved his family to the Southside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania sometime in 1884. William was a carpenter by trade. William passed away on September 6, 1906. According to the cemetery records, his cause of death was Chronic Gastroenteritis or Chronic Diarrhea. William lived 76 years, 5 months and 1 day.

William was enrolled in the Civil War as a "private" in Company "A" - 98th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment - under Captain Mitchell McMurray. He served from April 10, 1861 to June 29, 1865 and mustarded out in Clarion Co., Pennsylvania.
