Dr. Charles Brewer, son of John Marchant and Ann Eliza Wait Brewer, was noted for his bass voice. He was a part of a noted singing quartet of James L. Lake, W. L. Poteat and Kemp Harrington.
He was appointed as the first Dean of the College but resigned in 1915 to become the President of Meredith College.
Charles was the youngest of ten children. He married Love Estelle Bell, daughter of Joseph Etheridge Cartwright and Ellen Dozier Bell.
