Charles E. Brewer attended Vine Hill Academy in Scotland Neck, received his B.A. in 1885 and M.A. degree from Wake Forest College in 1886, Graduate student at John Hopkins University from 1887-1888, LL.D. degree from Wake Forest College, and Ph.D. degree from Cornell University in 1900, where he was made a member of Sigma Xi.
He served Wake Forest as Professor of Chemistry, 1889-1915 and Dean of the College, 1912-1915.
Dr. Charles Brewer, son of John Marchant and Ann Eliza Wait Brewer, was noted for his bass voice. He was a part of a noted singing quartet of James L. Lake, W. L. Poteat and Kemp Harrington.
He was appointed as the first Dean of the College but resigned in 1915 to become the President of Meredith College.
Charles was the youngest of ten children. He married Love Estelle Bell, daughter of Joseph Etheridge Cartwright and Ellen Dozier Bell.
