The 1910 US Census of Ward 4, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 59 Y/O Elisha Brasher Nelson, a coal mine manager, and his 57 Y/O wife, Mary Ella (Hubbard) Nelson. Residing in the household were their children: 17 Y/O Wayne B. Nelson; 16 Y/O Olin F. Nelson and their 27 Y/O married daughter, Edna (Nelson) Abercrombie and her 28 Y/O husband, William Alexander Abercrombie, a book keeper for a steel and iron company. Their child, Ralph Nelson Abercrombie, born on 19 Apr 1909, was also living in the household.

The 1920 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 39 Y/O William Alexander Abercrombie, the auditor of "Stockham Pipe and Fittings" manufacturing company (a powerhouse company for many decades), and his 37 Y/O wife, Edna (Nelson) Abercrombie. Also living in the household was their 10 Y/O son, Ralph Nelson Abercrombie.

The 1930 US Census of Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 49 Y/O William Alexander Abercrombie, the treasurer of "Stockham Pipe and Fittings" manufacturing company, and his 47 Y/O wife, Edna (Nelson) Abercrombie. Also living in the household was their 21 Y/O son, Ralph Nelson Abercrombie, and 78 Y/O Mary Ella (Hubbard) Nelson, the widowed mother of Edna (Nelson) Abercrombie.

Ralph Nelson Abercrombie, Sr. married Eleanor Margaret Overton on 14 Jul 1936 in Alabama. In 1939, he was working as a salesman for the Birmingham Paper Company.

Eleanor Margaret Overton's parents were Flavious Josephus Overton and Annie Lee Ferguson. Eleanor was born on 22 Oct 1912 in Birmingham, AL and died on 11 Jan 2002 in Birmingham, AL.

The 1939 Birmingham Alabama City Directory lists R. Nelson Abercrombie and his wife, Eleanor O. Abercrombie. Ralph was still employed as a salesman for the Birmingham Paper Company.

The 1953 Birmingham City Directory lists Ralph Nelson Abercrombie and his wife, Eleanor. Ralph was employed as a salesman at Sears.

The 1956 and 1957 Birmingham City Directories list Eleanor O. Abercrombie as a music teacher and Ralph Nelson Abercrombie employed as a special agent for the Paul Revere Insurance Company living together. Also noted living in the household was their daughter, Janelle, a student.

The 1958 Birmingham City Directory lists Eleanor O. Abercrombie living with her student daughter, Janelle M. Abercrombie, at the same address she had been sharing with her husband. Eleanor was employed as the publisher of "The Birmingham Messenger". Ralph Nelson Abercrombie was, however, living alone at a separate address from his wife. He was shown employed as a clerk at the U.S Post Office. Separate residences could indicate a separation and/or divorce.

The 1959 and 1960 Birmingham City Directories list Eleanor O. Abercrombie living alone at a new address, She was employed as publisher of "The Birmingham Messenger. Her son, Ralph Nelson Abercrombie, Jr., may have been living with her. The City Directory doesn't list anyone below 18 years old. Ralph Nelson Abercrombie was living in an apartment separate from Eleanor and was still a clerk at the Post Office. The 1960 Birmingham City Directory was the last one published.

My conclusion is that Ralph and Eleanor dissolved their marriage between 1958 and 1959. Sometime after 1960, Eleanor Margaret (Overton) Abercrombie married George G. Foster.

The children of Ralph Nelson and Eleanor Margaret (Overton) Abercrombie were:
1) Mildred Janelle Abercrombie b. 29 Dec 1937 Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL, m. 29 May 1957 to Millard Eugene Elrod.
2) Ralph Nelson Abercrombie Jr., b. 24 Jan 1944 Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL, m. 08 Sep 1960 to Karen Florence White.

Ralph Nelson Abercrombie was the 1st cousin 3 times removed of Pleasant Riggs Crump, who had the distinction of being recognized as the last surviving Civil War Confederate Veteran when he died on 31 Dec 1951. Among other notable events, he was at Appomattox Courthouse to witness the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee. See Find A Grave Memorial #13397843.
