GALESBURG -- Daniel J. Roberts, 77, a retired Knox County Circuit Court judge, of 8 Fairway Road died at 3:15 a.m. Friday, May 31, 1996, at Heartland Health Care Center.

Born Nov. 18, 1918, in Chicago to Daniel A. and Josephine Kral Roberts, he married Virginia Parsons on April 5, 1942, in Little Rock, Ark. She survives.

Also surviving are one son, Daniel A. of Newark, Calif.; one daughter, Carley Robison of Galesburg; and four grandchildren.

He served as circuit judge from 1971 until he retired in 1992. He was chief judge of the Ninth Judicial Circuit from 1971 to 1977. He was chief deputy clerk of the criminal court of Cook County in 1949. He was admitted to practice by the U.S. Supreme Court in 1958. He served as assistant attorney general in Knox County from 1952 to 1958. He was elected county judge of Knox County in 1958 and again in 1962. He served as associate circuit judge from 1964 to 1971. He served on the executive committee of the Illinois Judicial Conference from 1970 to 1976. He served as commissioner of the Illinois Law Enforcement Commission from 1969 to 1973. He served on the Illinois Youth Commission from 1965 to 1970 and the Governor's Conference on Youth from 1964 to 1967. He was a member of Western Illinois Legal Assistance. He was an instructor at Carl Sandburg Junior College in 1969 and 1970. A 1942 graduate of Knox College, he received his law degree from Kent Law School in Chicago in 1949. He was a member of the Mohammed Temple, Shrine, in Peoria. He was a member of the Galesburg-Knox County YMCA and served as its president in 1968. He was a member of the Galesburg Elks Lodge and Prairie Rod and Gun Club.

A World War II Army veteran, he served in the First Infantry Division in North Africa in 1942, retiring in 1946. He was awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He was a member of American Legion Post 285. Private family services will be Monday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. The Rev. Kermit W. Petersen will officiate. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery in Galesburg.

Memorials may be made to the Knox College library or Knox County Humane Society.
