NEWPORT NEWS - Jewell S. Ledford, 81, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 1997. A native of Micaville, N.C., she had been a Peninsula resident since 1943.
Mrs. Ledford was co-owner with her late husband, Joe, of the Gulf and Amoco service stations in Hilton. She was the food service supervisor at the Virginia Baptist Home from 1969 until 1984. She later became a resident of the Baptist Home in 1989. Mrs. Ledford was a member of Hilton Baptist Church, Newport News, since 1952. In 1981, she was awarded outstanding citizen in appreciation, recognition, commendable service and noteworthy achievement by the Woodmen of the World.
Mrs. Ledford was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Ledford Sr. She is survived by her daughter, Donna L. Anthony of Alexandria, Va.; her son, Richard Allen Ledford of Richmond, Va.; her sister, Louise S. Wallace of St. Petersburg, Fla.; four grandchildren, Lisa Anthony of York, Pa., Paula Rusher of Nokesville, Va., Joe Ledford and Louis Ledford, both of Richmond, Va.; and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Peninsula Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Hilton Baptist Church by Dr. R. Furman Kenney and the Rev. Raymond Howell. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park.
Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
