Elma was born Mary Elma Andrist to Frank and Margaret Regan Andrist, she had 5 sisters. Her father was a tombstone carver in Bismarck, North Dakota.

She married Howard Oscar Hendrickson in June 16, 1921 in Crookston, Minnsota. Howard and Elma moved to Bismarck, North Dakota where they had 9 children: Eugene, Robert, Mary, Daniel, Donald, John, Helen, Charles and Bonnie.They also raised a foster son, Clarence Olson. The family moved to the Seattle, Washington area in 1941 where Howard worked in the ship yards.

Mary passed away in September of 1989 in Morton, Washington and is buried in Washington Memorial Park in Sea Tac, King County, Washington.
