For the 78 years that Roena lived on this Earth, she brought joy to all who knew her.

She was born on April 14, 1934, the eighth of nine children born to Fred and Elvina Falling. The Falling Family lived on a farm outside of Vinita, Oklahoma, and they were close knit family. Roena's father, Fred, named his youngest daughter after the Kansas City Star's story, "Roena Rides the Rumble." She won a special place in her father's heart. Since the family was so large, they had to eat in shifts, but Fred let Roena eat at the first shift with him. She would stand at the corner beside him. Fred tragically died of a heart attack when Roena was 15, and her older brother took over the farm. The Falling children and their strong mother Elvina always took care of each other.

Like many farm families, children had to go to a bigger town to attend high school. Roena traveled to Centralia, Oklahoma and it was there that she met her future husband, Lawrence Odell Carpenter. They married on December 29, 1951 in Estella, Oklahoma, and would have celebrated their 61st year of marriage on December 29 of this year.

This partnership guided Roena's life as she became a pastor's wife when Odell dedicated his life to the ministry. Roena served in so many ways: running the nursery, filling in as the secretary, leading childrens' Sunday School classes, volunteering for Vacation Bible School, cooking at Falls Creek, cooking at church meals, cooking at group parties, cooking to help others. (It was a good thing that Roena loved to cook.) She was a constant companion at Odell's side, and during a church service could be found at her "adopted" pew. Roena was quiet and steadfast. She proved to be the perfect complement for Odell, and a wonderful pastor's wife.

Roena was loved by all who knew her. She was a caring mother, close to each of her children: Leslie Carpenter, Diana Tancer, and Starla Carpenter. Roena enjoyed spending time with friends and family, playing board and domino games, listening to music, and cooking everyone's favorite dish. The family took yearly camping trips to Noel Missouri, returning home tanned and tired, yet ready to go back. When the kids were grown, she and Odell traveled to Hawaii, Alaska, Israel and all over Oklahoma and Texas to visit friends. Bringing joy to others was joyous for her. She was such a loving soul that if you couldn't get along with Roena, you probably couldn't get along with anyone.

Roena also worked at several jobs. She graduated from Draughn Business College in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was a secretary at Reda Pump in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and she a bank teller in Bixby and Idabel for over fifteen years. And through it all, year after year, rain or snow, she was an Avon lady.

As a member of the Cherokee nation, Roena was proud of her heritage and interested it its history. Certainly to all of us who loved her, she was our special Cherokee princess. Roena lead a life of goodness and she claimed the promise of Psalms 23, "Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever." This is where she is now.

Roena is survived by husband, Odell Carpenter; her children, Starla Carpenter, at attorney in Urbana, Illinois; Diana Tancer, a teaching consultant in the New York City metro; Leslie Carpenter, who works for AT&T in Ft. Worth, Texas; two grandsons, Matt Carpenter, market manager in New York City; and Kenneth Carpenter, attending Texas Community College. She is also survived by four siblings, Thelma Allison, Frank Falling, Imagene Martin and Don Falling.
