"Donald Raymond Marti, 92, of Midland, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.

He was born in Kochville Township, Saginaw County, on April 23, 1918, to the late Raymond Andrew Marti and Elsie Loefler Marti. He grew up on the family farm in Kochville, and graduated from Arthur Hill High School, Bay City Junior College, and in 1940 from Michigan State University.

Don was employed in Muskegon until joining the U.S. Navy in 1942. After graduating OCS, he served as an assistant engineering officer aboard the Fletcher Class destroyer USS Charles Ausburne, spending 30 months in the South Pacific battle zone in the acclaimed 'Little Beaver Squadron' under Admiral Arleigh Burke. He was later stationed at the U.S. Navy Yard in Philadelphia, and left the service in 1946 as a lieutenant senior grade.

Don married Margaret (Peg) Bullock in Philadelphia on July 27, 1946, and they moved to Midland, where Don had accepted employment at The Dow Chemical Co. He worked as a design (mechanical) engineer in the engineering department until retiring in 1980.

Don was a member of the Midland Engineering Society and was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church.

Don is survived by his wife, Margaret Marti; by three sons, William of Fairborn, Ohio, Andrew (and wife Jill) of Princeton, Ill., and James (and wife Carol) of Canton. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Crystal Marti Edwards of Canton, Benjamin Andrew Marti of Ridgecrest, Calif., and Alyssa Jayne Marti of Princeton, Ill., and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother, Arthur Marti (and wife Eleanor) of Saginaw; a sister, Violet Berg of Battle Creek; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will take place 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, from Memorial Presbyterian Church, 1310 Ashman St., Midland. The Rev. Wallace H. Mayton III and The Rev. Dr. J. David Pierce will officiate, with burial in Midland City Cemetery. Don's family will receive friends at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Memorial Presbyterian Church or The Grace A. Dow Library. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Ware Smith Woolever Funeral Home where there will be no visitation.
