Grant was the sixth child of Cornelius L. and Leah Louisa Worster Gardner. He may have been named for his uncle, George Grant Newbery (who was married to his mother's sister, Amanda).

At the time of the 1870 census, he was 2 years old. He and his family were living in Charleston, Lee County, IA. By the 1880 census, his family had moved to Harrison Twp., Scotland County, MO, and he had already passed away.
