Removed From Old Associations.

In the past three days Cherokee
county lost three of its pioneer citi-
zens in the persons of W. H. Layne,
Mrs. Harriett M. Lennon and Mrs.
Sarah E. Hoke. Funeral services
over the body of Layne were held
at Columbus Sunday, where inter-
ment was made. The funeral of Mrs.
Lennon will be held this morning at
10 oclock from the residence and in-
terment will be made in the Oak Hill
cemetery. The arrangements of the
Hoke funeral have been deferred.

Walter H. Layne, 70 years old,
once sheriff of Cherokee county died
late Friday afternoon at the Mount
Carmel hospital in Pittsburg where
he had been removed from his home
near Crestline a few days previous.
He is survived by a wife and several
children. His death was hastened as
a result of the windstorm which vis-
ited the vicinity a short time ago,
which wrecked his home in which he
was critically ill. The body was
brought to Columbus Saturday, where
the funeral services were held on
Sunday.

Harriett M. Lennon, 45 years old,
wife of James K. Lennon, a promin-
ent farmer residing northwest of Ga-
lena, died at her home at 5:50
oclock Sunday afternoon after a lin-
gering illness with tuberculosis. The
Sunshine Club, of which she was a
member, will attend the funeral in
a body. The funeral services will
be held this morning, conducted by
Rev. Wallace Clift, and interment
will be made in Oak Hill cemetery.
She is survived by a husband, two
brothers, E. B. Schermerhorn of Ga-
lena and one in Michigan and one
sister, Mrs. Minnie Kenyon of Green-
ville, Mich.

Sarah E. Hoke, 64 years old, moth-
er of Mrs. Jennie Jones, a teacher
in the East Galena school, died Sun-
day night at 8 oclock at her home,
1116 Amherst street. Interment is
expected to be made at Baxter
Springs. She is survived by a hus-
band and three daughters.

Harriet was moved from the Oak Hill Cemetery, Galena, KS to Schermerhorn family mausoleum 10/01/1928. This would have been after her husband, James K. Lennon, who had later married her sister Minnie, was deceased.

Abbie was the first entombed in the Schermerhorn Mausoleum. However obviously their mausoleum was not completed when Abbie passed as she was first entombed on 12/26/1915 in the Rogers Mausoleum & then removed and entombed in the Schermerhorn on 08/26/1916. My information shows that she had the disease "gastritis" and that she had a bronze casket. So apparently their mausoleum was constructed between 01/1916 & 08/1916.

Notes: Came to Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1875. Twice married, first on November 21, 1878 to Miss Abbie Brown Simpson, she died December 23, 1915. He married Ella Brace Sumner on November 19, 1919, she died on January 18, 1923.

Mr. Shermerhorn, was by all accounts a very successful business man, rated as being a millionaire. Both Governors Hoch and Stubbs appointed him to special boards. The home he started to build in 1891 is "now listed on the National Register of Historic Places". Mr. Schermerhorn, is reported to have been a very generous and caring individual, giving to the less fortunate and many charities. He also donated 22 acres of land, in 1922, to the city of Galena to be used for a city park. The park was named Schermerhorn Park.
