12/25/30- 5/4/11 Successful business woman and life-time Eureka resident Carol Ann Schulz has died. The daughter of Mary and Arthur L. Pierce, Carol was born December 25, 1930. The Pierces owned several businesses in town including the Broadway Motel, which Carol came to own and manage for many years. Carol married Marvin Schulz, and they raised three children Karen, Laurence, and Gregory. As her children grew and moved away from Eureka, Carol began to travel, and this became one of her most passionate hobbies. Favorite destinations included Turkey, Morocco, Spain, Germany, England, France, Italy, Israel, and Indonesia. When asked where she would like to return if she could, Carol noted to a family member, "Bali is one of my favorite places in the world. The people are so kind, and it's so beautiful there." She enjoyed encouraging others to travel, hearing their stories, and sharing hers. She also enjoyed seeing the major art exhibitions in San Francisco, visiting casinos with friends, and shopping. Carol had a special fondness for animals, and raised many dogs over the years including Emperor and Bear. She endured a long and valiant battle with cancer, during which time she relied on the help of many. The family wishes to thank Dr. Cory Spencer, the staff at Timber Ridge, the staff of St. Joseph Hospital, Hospice of Humboldt County, and Carol's friends and neighbors. She leaves behind daughter Karen and husband Sean; son Gregory and wife Carolynn; brother Arthur Pierce; niece Mary and husband Will; nephew Bart and wife Renee. Interment was held at Ocean View Cemetery.
