Robert W. Wood, 86, of the 4900 block of West Norfolk Road, a retired Navy rear admiral, died Aug. 16, 1991, in his home.

Adm. Wood was born in Washington, D.C. He was a graduate of the Naval Academy, where he played varsity football, and the Naval Postgraduate School. He was a football coach at the Naval Academy in 1938. During World War II he served on several destroyers and was commanding officer of the USS Fox and the USS Owen. He was also a veteran of the Korean War. He served as planning officer in the Charleston, S.C., Navy Yard and director of training, 9th Naval District. He retired in 1956 as assistant director of the Surface Warfare Division, Office of Chief of Naval Operations.

He was a member of Military Order of the Carabao and the Army-Navy Club.

Survivors include his wife, Frances Dengler Wood; two daughters, Sheridan W. Nicholson of McLean, Va., and Suzanne W. Androux of Vaud, Switzerland; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Fort Myer Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery . Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling arrangements.
