Matilda "Tillie" M. Sites, 81, died Friday, Aug. 26 at Hadley Regional Medical Center, Hays.

Matilda Marie Purma was born Jan. 8, 1907 in Ellsworth, KS, to Edward and Emma Purma.

While still young, the family moved to Yocemento, KS, where her father owned a General Mercantile Store. During the first World War the family moved to Hays where Matilda attended school for two years. The next move was to Grinnell where she finished her schooling. Her father, at that time, was manager of the Farmers Union Grain Elevator and Hardware Store.

Matilda was married to Russell C. Sites on Sept. 5, 1926. They lived in Grinnell where she received her teaching certificate and taught in local country schools. The couple later moved to Oakley where Russell was a car salesman and Matilda made a home and worked in the Penny's Store. Their son, Donald, was born on April 26, 1936.

In 1937 they moved to Lansing and then on to Norton. The final move was to a farm south of Grinnell in the early 1940's when they bought the Sites family farm.

Matilda and her family loved to travel and this interest lasted through farming and years of retirement. As long as Matilda was able she was planning a tour to somewhere.

She loved gardening and raising chickens; was always interested in church and community activities and her grandchildren.

Matilda leaves her son, Donald, daughter-in-law Alberta; two grandchildren Dalen and Marla; her sister Georgia Skaer, and two brothers John and Edward. Her husband, Russell, and one brother, Arthur, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were at 10 a. m. Monday at the Grinnell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Garner Berg officiating; burial in Grinnell Cemetery. The family suggests memorials to the church.
